Philip Island Surfing, Koalas, Penguins & More #5

Overland Australia Series, Episode 184

Four days on Philip Island gave us time to explore. We made San Remo (and the local YHA hostel) our base. We tested the waters of the local surfing beach, the quieter inlet beach and the food at the local seaside fish & chips shop in Foots Lookout. We also visited some tourist spots like the Koala Conservation Center and the Nookies (protected  bird & seal breading grounds). But lets not forget what Philip Island is best known for; Penguin World. A over-visited structured exhibit where you can learn about penguins in a museum and then wait for the nightly event where the penguins exit the sea in mass to reach their protected breading grounds around the museum. Unfortunately no artificial light is permitted so getting photos of video is all but impossible. But fear not. I found the nightly penguin exit at the Melbourne pier much more intimate and rewarding.
